Overview

The OK Model Pilot 1/4 scale De Havilland Tiger Moth is a faithful reproduction of the legendary British training biplane, designed by the acclaimed Japanese designer Y. Matsumoto. With an 88-inch wingspan and 2247 square inches of wing area, this model captures the distinctive character of the aircraft that trained thousands of pilots during World War II. The design features snap-lock construction plywood fuselage and neatly die-cut balsa wing ribs, making for a straightforward build that results in a superb flying model.

This Varlocity Laser & Models laser-cut short kit provides the precision-cut components required to begin construction, allowing builders the satisfaction of completing the remaining structure using traditional techniques. The kit is ideal for modellers looking for a practical and enjoyable giant-scale project.

Aircraft History

The de Havilland D.H.82 Tiger Moth was the most popular and most famous British training aircraft of World War II. First flown in 1931, the Tiger Moth served as the primary trainer for the Royal Air Force and Commonwealth air forces throughout the war. It was derived from the highly successful D.H. 60 Moth series of civilian aircraft that included the famous Gypsy Moth.

Nearly 50 years after its introduction, many surviving machines continue to fly as civil aircraft, a testament to the enduring design. The Tiger Moth's distinctive biplane configuration, open cockpits, and characteristic sound made it a favourite with pilots and ground crews alike. Its docile flight characteristics and forgiving handling made it the ideal aircraft to train the thousands of pilots who would go on to fly Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Lancasters in combat.

More than 7,000 Tiger Moths were built, making it one of the most produced training aircraft in aviation history. Today, the Tiger Moth is a beloved fixture at air shows worldwide, and its classic lines continue to inspire model builders.

About the Model

This 1/4 scale model of the Tiger Moth was designed by Y. Matsumoto for OK Model Pilot in 1978. The design features a snap-lock construction plywood fuselage and die-cut balsa wing ribs, making for a strong and accurate build. The plan includes full-size templates for all required parts, allowing builders to cut a complete kit before starting construction.

The model is designed for .60 to .90 two-stroke glow engines or equivalent power. The flight characteristics are superb, with the model being described as "very docile" with "great scale presence in the air." The traditional balsa and ply construction uses conventional modelling tools and materials, making it a rewarding project for experienced builders.

Builder Notes

  • Suitable for advanced builders familiar with large-scale models.
  • The snap-lock plywood fuselage is a feature of this design, making for a strong and accurate build.
  • As with many large-scale plans, some builders have noted that the plans leave room for builder interpretation, which is part of the traditional scratch-building experience.
  • One builder noted moving the firewall back 50mm to accommodate a 30cc petrol engine with a Pitts-style silencer and carburettor through the firewall.
  • Dry-fit major assemblies before gluing.
  • Maintain accurate alignment throughout construction.
  • Functional rigging wires are a scale feature that adds to the model's presence.
  • Keep the tail structure as light as practical.
  • Balance the completed aircraft carefully at the recommended centre of gravity.
  • Fabric covering is recommended for a scale appearance, but lightweight iron-on film is also suitable.

Historical Information

Manufacturer: de Havilland Aircraft Company
Country: United Kingdom
First Flight: 1931
Primary Role: Primary Trainer

The de Havilland Tiger Moth was the primary training aircraft for the Royal Air Force and Commonwealth air forces throughout World War II.
